The World Series moves from Toronto to Los Angeles, and neutral fans should be hoping for a Game 7 because it’s the best thing in sports. Doesn’t matter whether we’re talking MLB, NBA or NHL. The drama is intoxicating.
Speaking of which, let’s raise a glass to Trey Mancini and Sara Perlman on the birth of their daughter Sadie Mila. Good things happening to good people.
I’ll drink to that.
I’d celebrate having some real news to report. Updates on the manager search are scarce. The Orioles operate quietly. Leaks so far have been just a few drips.
I’m flooded with more questions, so time to drain the mailbag again for the latest sequel to the beloved 2008 original.
I don’t edit and I don’t promise to have every answer. I can guarantee, however, that I’ve got the Godiva chocolates of mailbags and yours is a Necco Wafer.
Still no inside rumors on the field manager search?
Nothing inside or out. Sorry. Luis Rojas interviewed. The Orioles have interest in Albert Pujols and Scott Servais, per reports. Brandon Hyde interviewed with the Nationals, according to the New York Post, but that’s a separate topic.
There is always a lot of talk about a veteran for clubhouse leadership. Do you think not having last year’s vets was a major factor in this year’s failures? If one is extended, will Gunnar Henderson or Adley Rutschman ever be a captain?
Injuries and down years for some of the younger players were bigger contributors, but yes, the clubhouse needs a vocal leader who also is more than just talk. They could use a few. It isn’t fair to expect the “core” to take on that responsibility. They don’t have the experience, some of them are quieter personalities. James McCann was missed. I’ll say it again. Henderson and Rutschman could grow into that sort of role.
Presuming a new manager, what coaches is he likely to retain?
There are a few considerations here. We’d need to know the manager and his preferences. We’d need to know whether the Orioles would insist on one or more coaches staying on the staff. That’s an easier flex with a first-timer. They obviously value Buck Britton enough to promote him from Triple-A manager to major league coach and then third base coach. A new manager probably wants his own bench coach. Here’s my question: Could Tony Mansolino return to his former duties? He managed on an interim basis.
You said "duties."
Grow up.
Which Florida spring training stadium has the best press box?
The Braves have a huge press box at CoolToday Park in North Port. I don't know what else you'd need. It's only 1,000 times better than the Pirates' LECOM Park with its limited seating - even the Pirates' writers sit in a workroom in a building past the right field corner - and bar stools. We pray that those games aren't broadcast on Orioles radio because we can snatch a couple of seats in the booth. The Yankees' ballpark in Tampa has a decent press box except for a wall in the middle, with a photo of Babe Ruth, that creates a major obstruction. So, that's a bad press box. Get there early or get stuck behind the wall. Ed Smith Stadium's press box provides one bathroom, with one toilet, that's also shared by people in the "luxury suite." And some seats don't allow for a complete view of the field. Extra-base hits down the left field line are just a rumor. The Red Sox's ballpark in Fort Myers has a pretty good setup. The Tigers' ballpark in Lakeland has a press box that's so cramped, you have to walk outside of it to change your mind.
You're milking us for questions again? Should we all dress up like hardcore Cowser fans until free agency begins?
What you wear in the privacy of your own home is your business. Just close the blinds.
Which event will occur before the other in the future at Camden Yards: An All-Star Game or a World Series?
Oh, this is a good one. The All-Star locations are set through 2027 with Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia and Wrigley Field in Chicago. Per reports. Oracle Park in San Francisco is the early front runner for 2028. If it’s taking this long for the Midsummer Classic to circle back to Baltimore, I’m going with the World Series.
What's your starting staff at Norfolk in 2026? I think the following: 1. Cade Povich 2. Trey Gibson 3. Brandon Young 4. Chayce McDermott 5. Nestor German 6. Levi Wells or Zack Fruit.
Povich and Young could be forced to return to Norfolk simply because the Orioles run out of rotation room, though the bullpen is a possibility. Gibson for sure. German and Wells are solid picks. Fruit might have to start again at Double-A Chesapeake. I think McDermott is a bullpen guy. Keep in mind that the Orioles could plug in a starter signed to a minor league deal.
Do negotiations for Erick Fedde begin the day after the World Series is complete?
I’m gonna treat this one as a rules question. Players officially become free agents a day after the World Series, but there’s a five-day exclusive negotiation period for their former team. Everyone can start negotiating by Day 6.
Mickey's a mouse, Donald's a duck, Pluto's a Dog. What's Goofy?
This question. Goofy is a canine but he isn’t a regular ol’ dog like Pluto. He’s in the canine family, just like a wolf. I hope this information helps you sleep at night. Think of it as my Minnie contribution.
I don’t get it.
That’s what I’ve heard.
How did Tyler O'Neill pass the Orioles’ medical staff exam, but not Jeff Hoffman?
Concerns about Hoffman’s shoulder during the physical led to that deal falling apart. It also happened with the Braves. O’Neill went on the injured list three times this season with injuries to his neck, shoulder and wrist. Nothing that would be revealed in a physical before he signed. He was healthy. Or did you know this and lured me into your trap?
Do you think Trey Mancini could return to the Orioles in some other role such as coach or in the broadcasting booth? He was such a joy to watch on some very bad teams.
I don’t know that I’ve covered a nicer player, and I’ve been on the beat since ‘97. He’s such a good guy. Maybe it’s a tie. But back to your question. I don’t think he’s going to join the coaching staff and I haven’t heard of any broadcast openings. At this point, he probably wants to stay home with his family and be a husband and dad. Maybe somewhere down the road.
Would you trade for Sonny Gray? If we ate more of his salary, it might not cost as much prospect-wise.
If you trade for Sonny Gray, you’re getting all of his salary unless the Cardinals do some eating. He’s set to earn $35 million in 2026, with a club option for 2027. They better bring their appetite. Gray has a no-trade clause but apparently wants out of St. Louis. Yes, I’d make a run at him, and you’re correct about a lighter prospect cost because of the money. I’ll also point out, as usual, that it’s much easier to spend cash that belongs to someone else.
There’s been some talk about changing or securing the naming rights at OPACY. Do you think it’ll end up being a tech company, or maybe Jimmy’s Famous Seafood Stadium?
I like that last one if it happens. Or what about Pickles Pub Park? As long as it isn’t a gambling site.
Should the Orioles sign Edwin Díaz or Pete Alonso?
I’m spending the Orioles’ money again. Go get Díaz and solve the closer dilemma. The Orioles aren’t shopping for a first baseman, as far as we know.
How do feel about the Tide this year? I know they were ready to can the coach after Game 1.
It’s still a good idea. Can’t run the ball, can’t pass block, can’t tackle. They’re soft. Ty Simpson is turning into a pumpkin and missing open receivers and getting jittery behind that trash line. They take a massive, steaming dump every time they go on the road against an unranked opponent. Most overrated team in the country. Also, I hate sports and what they do to me.
But ... didn't they win yesterday?
They got lucky. Let me vent.
Is Jordan Westburg's near future at third base or second base?
Jackson Holliday is the second baseman. Jordan Westburg is the third baseman. Gunnar Henderson is the shortstop. First base can be shared by Coby Mayo and Samuel Basallo if the Orioles part ways with Ryan Mountcastle. Ladies and gentlemen, your Orioles infield.
After watching George Springer's impact on the Blue Jays and having teammates laud his leadership, what are the chances that the Orioles bring in a veteran position player to help mentor this young core? And not someone who is on the IL for 80 games a year.
It’s an offseason priority. But as I’ve said, and you eluded to, he’s got to be a productive hitter, a true threat in the order. Someone who can take pressure off the core guys.
Should PEZ be considered its own food group?
If “chalky” and “artificial” are important components of your diet. The dispensers are cool. And this is probably a good place to stop.
When will the Orioles break out their powder-blue unis?
This is definitely a good place to stop.
