SARASOTA, Fla. – Brad Bergesen isn’t sure when he’ll get back on a mound or pitch in a game. He’s just taking it one day at a time, cliché and all. That’s the only approach when dealing with a bruised forearm.
“It’s feeling better,” he said this morning. “It’s still obviously there. It’s tender and sore, but it’s getting better by the day. Today’s plan is I’m going to go out and stretch, throw, and really go from there. That’s all I know. There’s no plan. Today’s plan is I’m going to go out and stretch, throw, and really go from there. That’s all I know. There’s no plan. I don’t know if it goes well if I throw a bullpen after. I know none of that right now.”
Bergesen threw only four pitches Friday before being hit by Denard Span’s line drive and leaving the game. Manager Buck Showalter mentioned Tuesday as a possible return date, which would require Bergesen to pitch on three days’ rest.
“My goal when dealing with something like this is always get back as soon as possible, but I don’t think I’m in a position where I need to rush it,” Bergesen said. “My mindset is be ready for the season, so whether that’s Tuesday…that’s what I hope. But if it means one extra day and I go on Wednesday, to me that’s still pretty good for the shot that I took.”
Reminder that Koji Uehara is scheduled to throw one inning today against the Red Sox. Kevin Gregg also will pitch.
Former Oriole Matt Albers is making the trip to Sarasota. Brandon Duckworth is starting for Boston.
