Berken on Berken (updated)

Travis Snider hit an opposite-field home run off Kam Mickolio in the fifth. Blue Jays 4, Orioles 0. Mickolio has walked three batters in two innings. Matt Wieters threw out Brad Emaus trying to steal in the fifth. The Orioles have one hit, Cesar Izturis' leadoff single in the first. Update: Fifteen straight Orioles were retired until Ty Wigginton walked to open the sixth. Still only one hit as we enter the bottom of the seventh. Pedro Florimon pinch-ran for Izturis, who reached on a fielder's choice, and was picked off first base. Another perfect inning for Cla Meredith. And Jake Arrieta struck out two in a routine seventh.

Jason Berken said his stuff today was "the best that it's been in a long time, including last year." "My fastball had good action to it," he said. "My slider was better than I've probably ever thrown it. I only started throwing it the last couple times out. Numbers-wise it wasn't the greatest, but stuff-wise and my location, from my standpoint it as really good." Berken was around the plate all day, throwing 30 of his 43 pitches for strikes. "The key for me is just keeping the ball down," he said. "I pitched at the thighs too much last year. The biggest thing for me this year is, if I miss, it's going to be down. I thought the ball was down pretty good for me today." Berken showed up here expecting to compete with Chris Tillman and David Hernandez for a spot at the backend of the rotation, but he'll settle for a bullpen role. Just give him the ball instead of a ticket to Norfolk. "I look at it as, regardless of what my role is or what my spot is or what I'm competing for, I have to go out there and pitch well," he said. "Chris, Dave and I are all good friends and we're all pulling for each other. But the biggest thing is just pitching well regardless."
