Cla Meredith turned in another spotless performance today. He hasn’t allowed a baserunner in five innings. No hits, no walks, no runs.

“He’s getting both right- and left-handed hitters out,” manager Dave Trembley said. “For the most part he’s kept his pitches down in the count. He locates down. “He’s getting both right- and left-handed hitters out,” manager Dave Trembley said. “For the most part he’s kept his pitches down in the count. He locates down. And he’s shown the ability to get left-handed hitters out as well as right-handed hitters. He’s had a very good spring so far.”

Trembley isn’t ready to award Meredith a spot in the bullpen. Not yet, anyway.

“There are still many more opportunities for guys to go out there and pitch,” he said. “I hope they make it very difficult for me. I hope they continue to show progress and they keep pitching as if they’re doing everything they can to make this ballclub.

“There are some dogfights going on down there in the bullpen. They know it, and they’re pitching like they know it.”

“I thought that was the best Tejada’s looked playing third base. He made some very good plays. He looked very comfortable. That’s a real plus for us. Berken for the first six outs pitched well, pitched down, got some pitches up after that. There was a play in the outfield we didn’t make. Mickolio has good stuff, but he ran his pitch count up. I’d like to see him put hitters away a little bit earlier. We got to stretch some guys out, play them deeper in the game, and that was good for us.”

Jake Arrieta struck out four over two scoreless innings.

“Arrieta has a good arm,” Trembley said. “He’s highly thought of in this organization. There are times when you can see the whole package is there, and there are other times where he just misses. Arrieta is going to be a good major league pitcher someday.”
