Before closing my laptop for the final time tonight, I wanted to pass along some quotes from Brian Matusz following tonight’s gem.
You might recall that Matusz was 1-1 with a 10.95 ERA in three career starts against the Rangers before tonight. In two outings this year, both in Arlington, he pitched into the third inning in one and finished three in another. That’s it.

“It definitely felt good out there today, especially coming off two bad outings against Texas this year,” he said. “I felt like I had a good game plan. I sat down with Wieters and Kranny and discussed how we wanted to go after these guys. I think I just prepared myself really well along with having good stuff, and the defense was phenomenal tonight, so it was just a good mixture of everything. It’s a good feeling.
“It’s a tough lineup. It’s a lineup that’s really hurt me in the past. So for me, I really wanted to make sure I was prepared and had a game plan. I worked really well with Wieters tonight, had good stuff and attacked the zone and kept the defense on their toes. I think that’s why they made so many great plays.”
Now it’s up to Jake Arrieta to extend the starters’ streak of going eight innings.
“This one thing Millwood talked about before the year, it’s about pushing each other,” he said.
On a completely separate note, Triple-A Norfolk’s Nolan Reimold went 3-for-4 tonight and has reached base in 30 of his last 31 games, batting .321 with four homers, 15 RBIs and 29 walks.
Robert Andino, Matt Angle and Brandon Snyder also had three-hit games, with Andino adding a home run and three RBIs. Angle scored three runs and Snyder drove in two.
