Brian's song (updated)

Matt Wieters singled for his first hit in spring training. No need to panic. Koji Uehara threw another scoreless inning, giving up a bloop single on a popup that Robert Andino couldn't run down in shallow right field. Uehara threw 11 pitches, eight for strikes. That's 19 pitches in two outings. Mike Hinckley is struggling again. He gave up a run in the eighth to increase Minnesota's lead to 4-0 with one out and a runner on second. He took the loss in his last outing and also was roughed up in the intrasquad game. Brian Matusz seemed to be satisfied with today's outing despite the two-run first inning. He worked in three curveballs - once crossing up catcher Craig Tatum - and again liked the way he pounded the strike zone with fastballs. "I felt real good," he said. "My fastball in and out was excellent today. I threw some effective changeups. I felt comfortable out there. "I was really hitting the fastball down and in really well on righties, and I was happy about that. And I threw some good two-seamers. I felt like I had a lot of action on my two-seamer today, which was very effective for me. Overall, I was pretty happy about the outing. "Right now I'm really focusing on the fastball in and out. I don't know about the percentages, but I feel I've thrown the fastball for the majority of my pitches. I'm still trying to throw all three of my off-speed pitches, using them at the right times and trying not to overdo it. That's pretty much my main focus, just to get comfortable out there, get my work in, attack the zone with all the pitches. I felt like I threw a lot of strikes today. "One thing I'm really happy about is when I get to a 3-2 count, I've been able to really pound the zone and throw strikes. And not giving anyone any free passes is big." Matusz thought he made one bad pitch, on Michael Cuddyer's RBI single in the first. Ben Revere led off the inning with a double on a ball down and away. Revere came up again in the third inning and Matusz struck him out on a slider in the dirt.
