Britton made one start for the Orioles this season, allowing six runs and 10 hits in six innings in an April 29 game in Seattle. He’s 3-2 with a 3.28 ERA in 11 starts with Triple-A Norfolk.
Britton has allowed two earned runs or fewer in his last five starts with the Tides.
The Orioles must create a spot for Britton on their 25-man roster. They could option Jake Arrieta, who’s starting tonight. Otherwise, Britton could replace Miguel Gonzalez if the right-hander goes on paternity leave.
Gonzalez’s wife is due to deliver their first child on Wednesday.
Kevin Gausman isn’t eligible to start on Tuesday because he hasn’t been in the minors for the required 10 days and he wouldn’t be replacing a player who’s going on the disabled list.
Britton has made two career starts against the Tigers, both in Detroit. He’s 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA, with five earned runs and 12 hits in 12 innings. He’s walked seven and struck out six.
The current Tigers are 7-for-31 against Britton. Miguel Cabrera is 2-for-3 with three walks. Austin Jackson is 2-for-5 with a double.
