Manager Buck Showalter needs Chris Tillman to pitch deep into tonight’s game and save his bullpen after Brad Bergesen’s abbreviated start last night.
So far, the plan isn’t working.
Tillman threw 32 pitches in the first inning, and the Tigers parlayed four singles into a 2-0 lead.
Don Kelly bailed out Tillman by bouncing into a 6-3 double play to end the inning.
The fourth single, by Victor Martinez, came on a ball that caromed off the out-of-town scoreboard in right.

It’s no secret that the Orioles are poking around for a potential starter for the back of their rotation. They’ve got scouts spread out, as do other teams, of course.
Lee MacPhail, the Orioles’ director of professional scouting, attended the Toronto-Oakland series at Rogers Centre this week.
Update: The Orioles tied the game in the second inning on Vladimir Guerrero’s first home run and a Mark Reynolds RBI single. Adam Jones reached on a bunt single and stole second base before Reynolds produced his third RBI of the season.
Tillman has thrown 61 pitches through the third, and he’s retired seven batters in a row since Victor Martinez’s RBI single. His fastball is staying in the 86-89 mph range.
