NEW YORK – Orioles reliever Yennier Cano struck out the side yesterday in the seventh inning and was optioned after the game. Overall production and limited bullpen flexibility doomed the 2023 All-Star.
Reliever Yaramil Hiraldo was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk. He’s using Cano’s locker at Yankee Stadium.
Cano has a 4.73 ERA and 1.388 WHIP in 32 games. He was scored upon once in nine appearances this month, but the Rays tallied four runs against him in two-thirds of an inning. He had a streak of nine scoreless outings out of 10 prior to the implosion.
“It starts, ultimately, with the amount of innings we’ve had to cover here recently with the bullpen,” said interim manager Tony Mansolino. “We need a fresh arm. You have a limited amount of bullpen guys who have options, so there’s really just a couple to choose from. You start to look at the big picture, right? The whole season for players, too, and where maybe a guy can take a break and go down and maybe work on something and get back to what they were.
“I know yesterday looks great where Cano comes in, probably has one of his best outings of the year for us. I think you’ve got to be very careful with the recency bias and just understand that we have to look at the last three, four months, last year. And understand that Yenni Cano has been good at times. He’s been up and down. I think everyone can admit that. And I think this could be a really good opportunity for Yenni to go down right now and kind of make the small adjustment, whatever needs to be made in order to get back to being Yenni Cano.”
The news on Adley Rutschman is mixed. An MRI showed a “mild” left oblique strain, but the All-Star catcher isn’t expected to return until after the All-Star break.
This is Rutschman’s first career stay on the injured list.
“He’s dealt with it fine,” Mansolino said. “He wants to play. He’s kind of going stir crazy. I think the fact that it is mild in nature probably makes it a little harder for him.
“We all know abdominal and oblique injuries, if you push those things they can get really ugly, and instead of being three or four weeks, it could be three months. So for Adley, he feels something small, feels something mild. They went and got an MRI, checked it out, which validated that. In his mind he probably thinks he can possibly go out there, but obviously, we know medically that’s not the smart thing to do for him right now.
“He’s handling it fine. Just wants to play.”
After outfielder Tyler O’Neill had to shut down his rehab with Triple-A Norfolk due to recurring soreness in his left shoulder, he is resuming it today at High-A Aberdeen.
“That’s a good sign for us,” Mansolino said.
Infielder Jordan Westburg is out of today’s lineup with a sprained left index finger.
“Actually, the sliding mitt is supposed to protect his hand,” Mansolino said. “That’s the one that he did it. He doesn’t know how he did it. It’s been the same mitt that he’s used for a couple years, talking to him about it this morning. Kind of crazy that he hurt his finger. That’s what those things are for.
“It’s sore this morning. We’re hoping it’s two to three days. If it gets to be longer, then it’ll be another conversation at that point. I don’t think we know for sure what this is gonna be. The X-rays were negative, so it’s not fractured. That’s the positive. So nothing catastrophic, by any means, but definitely something we’re monitoring day-to-day right now.”
The Orioles don’t have much time to recover from yesterday’s lethargic, nearly no-hit 9-0 loss to the Yankees. They’ve got an 11:35 a.m. start time on Roku.
Maverick Handley is catching, Ramón Laureano is the designated hitter and Ramón Urías is the third baseman and batting second. He’s also hit cleanup and ninth in this series.
Dean Kremer has a 4.80 ERA and 1.364 WHIP in 15 games (14 starts). He’s allowed 10 runs and 17 hits this month in 17 1/3 innings.
Kremer is making his 13th career start against the Yankees. He’s registered a 4.40 ERA and 1.337 WHIP in 61 1/3 innings.
Aaron Judge is 5-for-15 with four home runs against Kremer. DJ LeMahieu is 8-for-21 with two doubles.
Gary Sánchez is 7-for-17 with two home runs and seven RBIs since leaving the injured list.
Gunnar Henderson’s hitting streak was snapped at 14 games yesterday.
The Orioles are 3-3 on the road trip. They’ve gone 14-7 in their last 21 games.
Right-hander Will Warren has made 15 of his 20 major league starts this season and posted a 4.83 ERA and 1.333 WHIP in 69 innings. He’s surrendered only six home runs and has struck out 90 batters.
Warren started at Camden Yards April 28 and allowed four runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings. Ryan O’Hearn hit a three-run homer.
Right-handers are batting .208 with a .576 OPS against Warren this season and left-handers are batting .262 with a .780 OPS.
Laureano is 2-for-2 with two doubles against Warren.
The Yankees placed right-hander Ryan Yarbrough on the 15-day injured list with a right oblique strain and recalled left-hander Jayvien Sandridge from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
