Mullins has missed the last three games with Triple-A Norfolk due to an illness. He’s batting a combined .288/.346/.465 in 108 games with Double-A Bowie (49) and Norfolk (59).
The Orioles promoted Mullins to Norfolk after he batted .313/.362/.512 with 12 doubles, five triples, six home runs and 28 RBIs with the Baysox.
The former 13th round pick in 2015 out of Campbell (N.C.) University is a plus defender and brings a needed element of speed and basestealing ability to a team that’s traditionally reliant on the home run.
Adam Jones took fly balls in right field during batting practice at Tropicana Field and could move over for the switch-hitting Mullins. Jones made two starts in right field for the Mariners in 2007 and has been used exclusively in center with the Orioles.
Mullins would be the 50th player used by the Orioles this season and the 11th to make his major league debut.
The Orioles have two openings on their 40-man roster, but they need to clear space on the 25-man.
Dylan Bundy is 3-6 with a 4.24 ERA and 1.400 WHIP in 15 career games (11 starts) against the Red Sox spanning 70 innings. Andrew Benintendi is 8-for-23 (.348) with two doubles, a triple and a home run against him. Brock Holt is 6-for-11 (.545) with two doubles.
Mookie Betts is a career .296/.383/.606 hitter in 35 games at Camden Yards and his 13 home runs and 28 RBIs are his highest totals in any visiting ballpark.
Nathan Eovaldi hasn’t allowed a run in two starts over 15 innings since joining the Red Sox from the Rays. He’s made five career starts against the Orioles and gone 2-0 with a 4.33 ERA and 1.556 WHIP in 27 innings. He’s allowed seven runs and 16 hits in 10 1/3 innings at Camden Yards.
Mark Trumbo is 5-for-8 with two doubles lifetime against Eovaldi and Caleb Joseph is 4-for-7 with a double and home run.
Chris Davis is 2-for-11 with a home run and six strikeouts.
Update: The Orioles have designated Danny Valencia for assignment to clear a roster slot for Mullins.
