Discussions are taking place that could allow the Orioles to keep Chavez in the organization. He would have to accept an assignment to Triple-A Norfolk if he clears waivers and isn’t traded.

Chavez apparently is open to the idea of resuming his career in the minors and perhaps being a September call-up. And the Orioles would like to have him around if it can be worked out.

“They brought it up to me today, some things that he and we are considering with Endy, most of them to stay with us in Norfolk,” said manager Buck Showalter. “We and he are considering it if things don’t work out for him somewhere else.”

The Orioles designated Chavez for assignment on Saturday when they purchased outfielder Nate McLouth’s contract from Norfolk. Chavez, signed to a $1.5 million contract over the winter, was batting 190/.222/.281. in 47 games and had two stints on the disabled list.

“We’ll see how it plays out,” Showalter said. “I know it’s a decision he and we would have to make. I know how I feel about it personally, and I’m not the only one making the decision. If you did it, it would be something that would be a September call-up at the worst. If you did it.”

There isn’t much more to report.

Jason Hammel will rejoin the team later this week, and the Orioles will determine whether he’s going to stay in Baltimore or report to Sarasota. Hammel has been playing catch from 120 feet and is very close to getting back on a mound.

Jim Thome probably will decide to go back home rather than stay in Baltimore or fly down to Sarasota. He’s shut down because of a herniated disc in his neck.
