Orioles left-hander Wei-Yin Chen was charged with eight runs tonight, the most of his major league career. He lasted only 3 2/3 innings, his shortest outing.

Chen twice gave up seven runs in a game last season. His shortest start lasted four innings on July 8, 2012 in Anaheim.

Gonzalez also worked an inning on Sunday. He’s still expected to start Friday night in New York.

Troy Patton entered the game in the bottom of the fifth with the Orioles down 8-2.

Mike Napoli homered to lead off the bottom of the fourth and give Boston a 4-2 lead. Dustin Pedroia had a ground-rule double with the bases loaded to score two runs, and Gomes delivered after an intentional walk to David Ortiz.

Ortiz was the last batter that Chen faced tonight.

Pedroia is 3-for-3 tonight and 7-for-13 lifetime against Chen, who allowed more than three earned runs for only the third time in 17 starts this season. It’s happened twice in his last three starts, however.

Danny Valencia is 2-for-2 tonight, demonstrating why he’s still on the roster. He’s now 4-for-6 lifetime against left-hander Felix Doubront.

Valencia figures to be the designated hitter again on Thursday against southpaw Jon Lester.

Update: It’s not getting any better for the Orioles.

Shane Victorino homered for the second time tonight, launching a three-run shot off Patton in the bottom of the fifth to increase Boston’s lead to 11-2.

This is Victorino’s second career multi-homer game, the first coming in 2008 while he played for the Phillies.
