Dickerson is making his seventh O’s start, today as the DH, after hitting a three-run homer in the eighth last night, which pulled the O’s within 12-10 against Tampa Bay.

Dickerson is batting .320 with a homer, six RBIs and an .866 OPS in 12 games. In his last five starts, he is 7-for-17 with two doubles and a homer.

That is a nice contribution for a player that has not been a regular in the lineup. How does he keep his bat ready when not playing every day?

“It is just coming out for extra BP and making sure you get your work done in the cage. Hitting off the machine. It is a variance of different tools you can use to kind of stay in the game. That goes for standing in on pitchers when they throw bullpens as well,” he said.

Today is the first time he is making back-to-back starts as an Oriole. Does he feel the club will take a longer look at him over the next few weeks?

“That is not for me to say. I’m just going to do the most with any opportunity I get,” he said.

In signing Dickerson as a minor league free agent Jan. 29, the Orioles picked up a player who had been with the Yankees the last two years. In 2012, he hit .286 in 14 Yankees at-bats and .316 with their Scranton Triple-A club.

With a career big league average of .269 in 543 at-bats, with an OBP of .352 and OPS of .765, Dickerson has some pretty solid credentials for someone considered an extra outfielder.

What led him to sign with the Orioles?

“There was an opportunity to make the team and contribute, but playing against this team the last two years in the East, I was familiar with them. Where this team is going, and the direction they are going in as an organization is something I’ve become familiar with. There is some great young talent here, and it is an exciting time to be here with this group,” Dickerson added.

More rotation numbers: For the seventh time in the last eight games, the Orioles’ starting pitcher will not get a quality start. Jair Jurrjens gave up four runs over five innings today, but he leaves with a 6-4 lead as Tommy Hunter comes on. Jurrjens can get a win.

Over the last eight games, O’s starters have pitched to an ERA of 7.32 (32 ER in 39 1/3 IP) and the O’s starter has gone five or fewer innings now in six of the last seven games.
