The reader that calls himself “eagleeye” had an interesting question earlier today.
He wanted to know how Joe Mahoney’s great start with Double-A Bowie compared to Matt Wieters torrid start when he tore it up at Bowie in 2008.
An interesting question and, after a little research, here are the numbers for Mahoney and Wieters in their first 24 games at Bowie.
Wieters in 2008: .333-3-11……13 runs…..6 doubles…..419 OBP……519 slugging…….938 OPS.

Wieters got promoted from Frederick to Bowie that year on June 28 and Mahoney went up this year from Frederick on July 9. Wieters went on to hit .365-12-51 that season with an OPS of 1.085 in 61 Baysox games.
I would say Mahoney stacks up rather well.
The Orioles, at this point, don’t appear to be thinking about moving Mahoney to Triple-A. First of all, it’s been just 24 games for him at Bowie. Secondly, they have several first baseman already at Norfolk looking for at bats to include Brandon Snyder, Michael Aubrey and Rhyne Hughes. Nolan Reimold has also played some at first.
It would seem unlikely that Mahoney would get a September callup to Baltimore, but then again, if he keeps this hitting up, would new manager Buck Showalter want to take a look?
