Backup catcher Craig Tatum fouled a ball off his left foot in the fourth inning and collapsed to the ground. He limped out of the batters box, a grimace on his face.
He’ll have to play through the pain.
The Orioles are short on reserves with Matt Wieters unavailable and Felix Pie recovering from a strained quad. Pie says he’s ready. Interim manager Juan Samuel says he’d rather wait until after the break.

The Orioles are short on reserves with Matt Wieters unavailable and Felix Pie recovering from a strained quad. Pie says he’s ready. Interim manager Juan Samuel says he’d rather wait until after the break.
Jake Fox is the backup catcher again today, except he’s also the starting first baseman. Scott Moore is the only healthy reserve, and he could replace Fox at first if necessary.
Let’s just keep Tatum behind the plate and not complicate things. Moore’s bat might be needed in the late innings.
Down on the farm, Armando Gabino improved to 5-0 with a 2.48 ERA in Triple-A Norfolk’s 5-4 win over Durham. Pushed back into the rotation, Gabino allowed three hits and walked none in 6 1/3 scoreless innings.
The Orioles might want to consider him if they redesign the bullpen again in the second half, though Michael Gonzalez is expected to be the first addition unless it’s decided that he’s still not ready after pitching Tuesday in Aberdeen.
Gabino threw 69 pitches today, 49 for strikes.
Robert Andino went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Blake Davis was 2-for-3 with a double and a run. Dennis Sarfate recorded the last two outs for his 11th save.
Josh Bell didn’t play today.
