masn-baseballs-orioles.jpgCondolences go out to former Orioles second baseman and manager Davey Johnson, whose stepson Michael Jacob ‘Jake’ Allen, 34, died Tuesday, according to a statement issued by the Washington Nationals.

Allen died from pneumonia and infection at Florida Hospital in Orlando with his parents and siblings at his side. He had been hearing and visually impaired since birth.

In lieu of flowers, the Johnson family requests that contributions be made, in Jake’s memory, to Lighthouse Central Florida in Orlando. A memorial service honoring Allen will take place at Florida Hospital Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Orlando on Friday, May 6 at 10:30 a.m., per the Nationals statement.

Johnson has been active in programs and services that help the disabled community in central Florida.

Johnson played eight of his 13 major league seasons in an Orioles uniform and was the second baseman for the teams that reached the World Series in 1966, 1969, 1970 and 1971, winning the commissioner’s trophy in 1966 and 1970. He was a three-time All-Star while in Baltimore and won three Gold Gloves from 1965-72 in an Orioles uniform.

He managed the Orioles in 1996 and 1997, reaching the postseason in both campaigns. His 1997 club went 98-64, the last time the Orioles have finished above .500.

Johnson, who has also managed the Mets, Reds and Dodgers, was named to his current position as a senior adviser to Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo in November 2009.
