Davis hit his 12th home run tonight in the bottom of the seventh inning, and his second in two games. Without doing any research, I’m pretty sure his latest is the only one that shattered his bat.

Davis was left holding the handle of the bat as the Orioles lead grew to 7-1 on his two-run shot off Pirates reliever Tony Watson.

Davis also has an RBI double tonight and is hitting .305 with 12 homers and 31 RBIs. He’s batting third again tonight as the designated hitter.

Manager Buck Showalter has explained that Davis is more comfortable at DH than Mark Reynolds, who continues to start at first base. Davis is 28-for-79 with three doubles, seven homers and 16 RBIs in his last 21 games since May 16.

The Orioles and Yankees are the only teams with six or more players with at least eight home runs.

Jake Arrieta went seven innings tonight for the first time since May 18, holding the Pirates to one run and seven hits, walking one, striking out nine and hitting a batter. He threw 108 pitches, 69 for strikes.

The Pirates proved to be the ideal tonic for Arrieta.

Brian Roberts is 0-for-5 tonight after going 3-for-4 with an RBI last night.
