Single-A Delmarva third baseman Jomar Reyes is going to miss some time with a sprained right thumb that will need to be immobilized for a couple of weeks.
The 18-year-old from the Dominican Republic, who is ranked as the No. 10 Orioles prospect by Baseball America, will be placed on the disabled list. This injury will force him to miss the South Atlantic League All-Star Game set for June 23.
But the news could have been worse, and there is no break or surgery needed for Reyes. For the Shorebirds, he is batting .283 with 14 doubles, four triples, two homers and 24 RBIs in 54 games. Reyes has a .343 OBP, a .424 slugging percentage and an OPS of .767.
Reyes got hurt in a game on Friday night. The next day, Orioles manager Buck Showalter informed reporters of the injury.
“I hope that doesn’t come back broken. Good-looking player. Pretty exciting player,” Showalter said on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Double-A Bowie outfielder Mike Yastrzemski is listed as day-to-day with a sprained right thumb. That injury happened while diving for a ball in the outfield on Friday, but he did pinch-run in the game on Saturday.
In 53 Baysox games, Yastrzemski is batting .270 with 17 doubles, two triples, two homers and 23 RBIs. He has a .347 OBP, a .387 slugging percentage and .734 OPS.
The grandson of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, the younger Yaz is ranked as the Orioles’ No. 9 prospect by Baseball America.
