Different night, different team, much different results.

Dickey has faced 12 batters in only two innings, and seven have reached base. Nine Orioles came to the plate in a four-run second inning.

Adam Jones, Chris Davis and Matt Wieters strung together singles to open the second inning and give the Orioles a 1-0 lead. Ryan Flaherty walked with one out to load the bases, and Nolan…The Orioles apparently have recovered from the one-hit shutout that R.A. Dickey threw against them last summer.

Nate McLouth walked to load the bases again, and Manny Machado grounded a two-run single up the middle.

Dickey already has thrown 46 pitches. Then again, he’s a knuckleballer, so he can throw 146 and still be available the next day.

Miguel Gonzalez retired the first six Blue Jays before Colby Rasmus doubled in the third. Henry Blanco singled with one out – No. 9 hitters seem to perplex the Orioles this season – but Munenori Kawasaki grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.

Flaherty did a nice job again on the relay. He looks better at second base at every turn (of a double play).

Update: Gonzalez was cruising along until two outs in the sixth, when he walked Adam Lind and Jose Bautista, and Edwin Encarnacion followed with a three-run homer to left.

Orioles 4, Blue Jays 3.

Melky Cabrera tripled off the center field fence, and he thought about trying for an inside-the-park homer as the ball rolled away from Jones. Brett Lawrie lined to deep left, and Gonzalez was back in the dugout at 93 pitches.

No Orioles starter has completed seven innings. Gonzalez appeared to be a lock, but not anymore.

Brian Matusz is warming in the Orioles’ bullpen.

Update II: Gonzalez is done after six innings. He’s charged with three runs and five hits in six innings, with three walks, four strikeouts and a home run. He threw 93 pitches, 58 for strikes.

Gonzalez has three quality starts in four outings.

The Orioles failed to build on their one-run lead in the sixth. Dickey walked Wieters and Flaherty, but Reimold grounded into a double play.

Update III: Matusz retired the side in order in the seventh, striking out two. He walked pinch-hitter Mark DeRosa leading off the eighth, and manager Buck Showalter called upon Pedro Strop.

Pinch-hitter Rajai Davis laid down a sacrifice bunt and Bautista bounced to short, with J.J. Hardy making a nice play. Encarnacion walked on four pitches, but Cabrera struck out looking at a 3-2 fastball on the outer half of the plate.

OK, probably missed the outer half, but not according to plate umpire Alfonso Marquez.

Matusz has allowed one run and two hits in 7 2/3 innings over eight appearances, with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Update IV: Jim Johnson picked up his eighth save, as the Orioles held on for a 4-3 victory over the Blue Jays.

Johnson struck out two batters and stranded the tying run at first base. He still hasn’t allowed an earned run in 11 innings.

The Orioles improve to 12-8 overall and 6-2 on this homestand. They’re a season-high four games above .500.
