Orioles director of scouting Joe Jordan just met with reporters in the back of the press box. Steve Melewski will run quotes later in his blog.
Jordan believes that fourth-round pick Trent Mummey, an outfielder from Auburn, is “ready” and will sign quickly. First-rounder Manny Machado will take a lot longer.
Jordan said he’ll call Machado tomorrow, but “it’s going to take some time. There’s no way around that. He’s one of the better players in the draft.”
Shortstop David Blanchard of Sherokee County High School, taken in the 41st round, is “Mr. Football” in Alabama.
Earlier today, the Orioles selected pitcher Travis Strong in the 39th round. The draft tracker didn’t list a school.
Parts unknown?
Strong, 22, was ineligible to pitch at Palomar Community College in San Diego. The Orioles watched him throw a bullpen session four months ago and were impressed. Scout Mark Ralston stayed on him, and the Orioles expect to sign the right-hander.
Jordan described Strong as having a “Matt Garza-looking body.”
Chris Tillman threw 12 pitches in a scoreless first inning. He gave up a one-out single to Nick Swisher.
