After years of being sellers at the non-waiver trade deadline, the Orioles are poised to move in the other direction.
It’s time to see how the other half lives.

It’s time to see how the other half lives.
Executive vice president Dan Duquette spoke earlier today of the pitching depth in the organization that allowed the Orioles to bypass purchasing Jamie Moyer’s contract, but he’s not committed to staying in-house. And he’s not simply looking to bring in minor leaguers in exchange for veterans, not with the Orioles 1 1/2 games behind the Yankees in the American League East.
Remember those deadline deals that had the Orioles parting with the likes of Koji Uehara, Derrek Lee and George Sherrill? They’re not currently interested in aiding another team’s playoff aspirations.
“We’re in contention, and we need to look at all the options we have to help our team, but we have some pretty good options in our minor league system to bolster the team that we have here,” Duquette said.
Duquette repeated what he told season-ticket holders earlier today during a Q&A session on top of the visiting dugout at Camden Yards – he’s got the full support of ownership to make deals that will bolster the 25-man roster.
“Absolutely,” he said.
“We’re in contention, so we’re going to do whatever we can to make the playoffs.”
However, Duquette isn’t looking to strip the organization of its top prospects and remove an eye aimed at the future.
“I like to build an organization so that we have depth throughout the organization,” he said.
