Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette indicated that Double-A Bowie pitcher Hunter Harvey will remain shut down following today’s visit with Dr. James Andrews.

Andrews examined Harvey’s right shoulder and Duquette said, “It needs a little more time.”

“But evidently he’s feeling pretty good,” Duquette added.

The interest in shortstop Manny Machado continues to pick up as the industry gets closer to the non-waiver trade deadline. Duquette confirmed that it’s increased since the Winter Meetings in December.

“He’s having a good year,” Duquette said.

“There are some teams that are in the market for help on the left side of the infield and some are looking for a shortstop and some are looking for a third baseman.”

Duquette-Sunglasses-Sidebar.jpgDuquette didn’t get into specifics regarding his asking price in trade talks, but it’s known that young controllable starting pitching is a priority. A potential replacement for Machado also is desired.

“We’re looking to add the best young players that we can get for our organization,” he said. “We were trying to do that in the wintertime, but it’s a more defined market this time.”

Scouts are following the team for reasons that extend beyond Machado. Closer Zach Britton, center fielder Adam Jones and reliever Brad Brach also are regarded as prime trade chips as they approach free agency.

“Teams know that we’re not in the race for this year’s playoffs, so they know that we declared as sellers,” Duquette said.

“Once you declare as a seller, then the teams that are looking to add, then they can come and they can take a look and see what they can find to help their ballclub the rest of the way.”

The club hasn’t approached Jones about an extension and they’d need him to waive his 10-5 rights in order to trade him. Jones can veto any deal because he’s been in the league at least 10 years and with the same club for five.

Britton is rounding back into form following Achilles surgery and scouts continue to monitor his health and production. He was a hot commodity before the injury.

“I think Zach needs to pitch a little bit,” Duquette said. “He didn’t have the benefit of the spring training period, so I think he needs to pitch a little bit for clubs to take a look at him and for him to get back to his previous high level.”

The Orioles announced their roster moves for today. They recalled infielder Steve Wilkerson and pitcher Jimmy Yacabonis from Triple-A Norfolk and placed outfielder Craig Gentry and reliever Darren O’Day on the 10-day disabled list. Gentry (left rib fracture) has his assignment retroactive to Sunday. O’Day strained his left hamstring last night.
