They played together for eight seasons with the Orioles, collectively earning 12 All-Star appearances, a Rookie of the Year Award, an MVP Award, six Silver Sluggers and three Gold Gloves. And on Wednesday, Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr. and Eddie Murray reunited for another impressive reason.
The duo was on hand in West Baltimore with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation to unveil the new Eddie Murray Field at BGE Park.
Together, Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) and the Ripken Foundation noticed the need for a safe place for the youth of West Baltimore to play. They united to build the field, named after Murray, which features a synthetic turf baseball diamond with dugouts, a backstop, bleachers and a digital scoreboard.
Beyond hosting youth for after-school programming, Eddie Murray Field will also serve as the home field to James Mosher Baseball, the oldest continuously operating African-American youth baseball league in the country.
Take a look at the unveiling below and hear Ripken and Murray’s thoughts on the impact the field will have on the community.
To date, the Ripken Foundation has completed 74 turf facilities – including 11 parks in Maryland – which have impacted more than 279,000 youths in 21 states nationwide.
