Chavez signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Orioles last winter and batted .203/.236/.278 with six doubles, two homers and 12 RBIs in 64 games. He went on the disabled list twice, with a strained left oblique and right hamstring, and the Orioles designated him for assignment on Aug. 4.

The Orioles selected Chavez’s contract on Sept. 11 and included him on their wild card and Division Series rosters.

Chavez became a free agent after the season and the Orioles made no effort to re-sign him. They re-signed Nate McLouth, Lew Ford and Steve Pearce, and acquired Trayvon Robinson from the Mariners for infielder Robert Andino. They also signed Jason Pridie as a minor league free agent.

Nolan Reimold is expected to be full-go for spring training and Nick Markakis is recovered from thumb surgery. Manager Buck Showalter will have plenty of outfielders in camp.

Chavez, 34, broke into the majors with the Royals in 2001. He’s also played for the Expos, Nationals, Phillies, Mets, Mariners and Rangers.

Note: The Royals also signed former Orioles infielder Miguel Tejada to a minor league deal.

Tejada will receive $1.1 million if he sticks with the Royals, according to reports.

You may recall that Tejada signed a minor league deal with the Orioles last summer and opted out after batting .259/.325/.296 with no homers and 18 RBIs in 36 games with Triple-A Norfolk. According to people I talked to in the organization, he couldn’t pull the ball any longer and was pretty much an opposite-field singles hitter.

Tejada must have impressed the Royals in the Dominican Winter League, where he’s batting .284/.336/.433 with nine doubles, four homers and 19 RBIs in 34 games.

So who’s next for the Royals? I’m guessing Jamie Moyer unless Sidney Ponson worked out for them.
