The Orioles are changing up their outfield before this afternoon’s game against the Brewers.

Christian Franklin has been reinstated from the 10-day injured list after playing in four rehab games with Triple-A Norfolk. Heston Kjerstad is optioned after going 4-for-19 with a double and two RBIs in 11 games with the Orioles following his arrival on Sept. 1.

Franklin, acquired from the Nationals at the trade deadline, is 5-for-34 in 16 games. He gives the Orioles speed, defensive versatility and another right-handed bat.

The IL still has a dozen players on it.

Left-hander Trevor Rogers makes his 29th start today. He allowed only three combined runs in 14 innings in his first two starts this month before surrendering four runs and seven hits over six innings in Toronto. The damage included three home runs.

Rogers is 4-0 with a 2.84 ERA in five career starts against the Brewers. William Contreras is 4-for-7 with three doubles.

The Orioles remain three games back of the last Wild Card, now chasing the White Sox after they lost last night to the Tigers and fell out of first place again in the American League Central.

Last night’s 6-5, 10-inning loss included Pete Alonso’s game-tying three-run homer in the third inning and a two-run, game-tying rally in the ninth.

“I’ll tell you, this is an authentic feeling I had all game, I don’t know what place they’re in or where they’re at in the standings, but to have those guys playing the way (manager Craig Albernaz) has got those guys playing, the commitment and the way the fans are into the game, they’re playing like a first-place team,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said afterward.

“The energy and the enthusiasm in Game (154), that was impressive, man. You see Alonso, one of the best hitters in the game, on the top rail the whole game, talking about what the pitcher has. I was so impressed. That guy managing the team over there, he’s got their attention. That was special.”

In the end, it still produced another loss at a time when the Orioles can’t afford them.

The Orioles used seven relievers last night for the second time in four games.

Milwaukee left-hander Robert Gasser, the Padres’ second-round draft pick in 2021 out of the University of Houston, has posted a 4.30 ERA in 19 games (18 starts). Left-handers are hitting .170 with a .577 OPS against him and right-handers are hitting .275 with an .800 OPS. He has a 3.62 ERA in 10 home games and a 5.01 ERA in nine road games.

In his last four starts, Gasser has allowed five earned runs with eight walks and 20 strikeouts over 19 1/3 innings.

Gasser has never faced the Orioles and none of the current players have at-bats against him.
