Chris Tillman said he was a little too “jumpy” on the mound today, which contributed to a high pitch count (42).

“I wanted to get the ball to the plate as fast as I could,” he said. “Other than that, body felt good, my stuff was good. Just a little too cute. When I was going in, I’d miss a little in. When I was going away, I’d miss a little away. Those kinds of things. Felt good to get that first one out of the way. I think I’m right there. I just need to pull on the reins a little bit, back myself off a little bit.”

Tillman, 22, is fighting for a roster spot, but manager Buck Showalter warned that the right-hander can’t approach every outing as if it will determine his fate. Showalter also reminded reporters that only a few players in camp are younger than Tillman.

“I try not to buy into the age thing too much,” Tillman said. “I’ve been hearing that for four years now. It is what it is, I guess. I go out there and I feel like I fit in with the rest of the guys. I go out there and try to compete with everybody. I don’t buy into it too much.”

Tillman was asked if he feels like he should be further along in his professional career.

“Everybody can say that they hope that they’re better than what they are,” he replied. “I think I’m coming along well. From what I saw today, I liked what I saw. I just need to pull back on the reins a little bit. I was excited, antsy, to be out there.”
