Freddy Garcia got out of a jam in the first inning, but allowed two runs in the second, two runs in the fourth and took the loss this afternoon in the Orioles’ 8-4 defeat against San Diego.
He struggled with his control almost from the start as he falls to 0-2 with an ERA of 5.51 in three Orioles starts.
“I was behind on the guys all day long,” Garcia said. “Threw 75 pitches in 3 2/3, that’s a lot. Second inning, got two outs and gave up that base hit for two runs right there.

“I was behind on the guys all day long,” Garcia said. “Threw 75 pitches in 3 2/3, that’s a lot. Second inning, got two outs and gave up that base hit for two runs right there.
“I need to pitch better, hit my spots and pitch ahead in the count. Today, I was behind in the count all day long. Felt better in the last inning I was pitching but sometimes I don’t have the feel on my pitches.
“Second inning, it was the bottom of the order, the seven, eight, nine hitters who did the damage. I have to do a better job with those guys. I have to pitch better.”
Garcia gave up seven hits and four runs over 3 2/3 innings. At a time when two rotation pitchers are on the DL, he was certainly hoping to do much better than that this afternoon.
“Every time, I went to go at least eight innings. I want do do my job the best I can,” he said.
Meanwhile, Miguel Gonzalez is scheduled to throw at 3 p.m. Friday in a simulated game at Camden Yards after throwing some today. He expects to pitch without a bandage on his right thumb, which has been nursing a blister.
“I think this was a good idea,” Gonzalez said. “Today the ball was coming out good. Breaking pitches were fine. Pretty happy with that today.”
