The Orioles are keeping Kevin Gausman on his injury rehab assignment.
Gausman will report to Triple-A Norfolk and start Wednesday night in Charlotte. He could be activated and start for the Orioles when his turn comes up again, but the decision is pending.
Gausman, on the disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis, has allowed three runs (one earned) and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings at Double-A Bowie and Single-A Frederick. The Orioles want to get him up to 90 pitches with Norfolk, preferably within five or six innings.
Asked whether Gausman is assured of joining the Orioles rotation when activated, manager Buck Showalter replied, “Everything is in play until we get through tomorrow.”
Left-hander Brian Matusz will work two or three innings tonight at Single-A Frederick. He could be activated this weekend in Kansas City.
Jimmy Paredes played left field and right field today at extended spring training and may be ready for an injury rehab assignment by Monday.
The Orioles want Paredes, on the disabled list with a sprained left wrist, to get around 20 at-bats at extended spring training.
Showalter believes that Paredes will “move fast” on the rehab assignment, leaving the Orioles with a difficult roster decision.
Showalter noted that the club actually has three tough decisions pending with Gausman and Matusz also nearing returns.
Vance Worley is available in the bullpen tonight.
