Gonzalez drilled Chris Dickerson on the side of the batting helmet with his third pitch, earning an instant ejection from plate umpire Dan Bellino.

How in the world can Bellino assume Gonzalez was trying to hit Dickerson in that situation?

This is Guthrie’s first relief appearance since April 30, 2007.

Dickerson eventually rose to his feet and was able to walk off the field. He has a welt on the left side of his head. It was a scary moment.

It also was a confusing one, given Bellino’s decision to toss Gonzalez. I expected manager Buck Showalter to go ballistic, but he never did.

A.J. Burnett is pinch-running for Dickerson. Why not?
