Trey Gibson was the first Orioles starter in franchise history today to make his major league debut against the Yankees in the Bronx. Reliever Chris Vallimont was the last Orioles pitcher on July 3, 2023.
A couple of Ballengee Group clients with something else in common.
Vallimont got the last two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 6-3 loss – his only major league appearance. Isiah Kiner-Falefa doubled and was thrown out trying for a triple, and Anthony Volpe struck out.
That was it for Vallimont, who was designated for assignment two days later and traded to the Guardians. He pitched for the independent York Revolution in 2024 and 2025.
Gibson is hoping for a much longer career.
The former undrafted free agent allowed three runs and four hits in 4 2/3 innings today and had a big smile on his face as manager Craig Albernaz came to the mound. He walked two, struck out two and surrendered two home runs. Gibson walked Aaron Judge with two outs in the fifth, on his 87th pitch, and Grant Wolfram replaced him.
The smiles disappeared on the visiting side. The Orioles lost 11-3 and are a season-worst four games below .500 at 15-19.
The defense was shaky again. Albernaz had to use five relievers. Andrew Kittredge retired one batter in the eighth and was charged with seven runs and seven hits.
The Orioles have dropped eight straight games at Yankee Stadium since June 21, 2025, their longest streak since a franchise-record 12 in a row from May 15, 2019-April 6, 2021.
The Orioles have lost four games in a row by at least five runs for the first time since June 8-11, 2017.
Ben Rice welcomed Gibson to the majors with a one-out home run in the bottom of the first inning. Rice ambushed Gibson, lining a first-pitch curveball to right field at 109.8 mph off the bat.
Gibson escaped his first jam after Judge reached on third baseman Weston Wilson’s fielding error. Judge made it to second base on the play, but Cody Bellinger grounded out and Jazz Chisholm Jr. flied out.
Rice reached with one out in the third on a fly ball down the left field line that eluded Wilson and Taylor Ward as they attempted to make a sliding catch. They were fortunate to avoid a serious collision.
Unfortunately for Gibson, Judge followed with a two-run homer for a 3-1 lead. Gibson was hurt again by the curveball, which traveled 413 feet at 107.7 mph.
Gibson was the ninth starter and 23rd pitcher used this season. Wilson has made an emergency relief appearance.
Max Fried threw 25 pitches in the first inning, including nine to Ward, who drew his 29th walk.
Ward has reached base safely 66 times through his first 34 games – 36 hits, 29 walks, one hit-by-pitch – the second-highest figure by an Oriole in franchise history after Frank Robinson’s 70.
Fried retired the next three batters after Ward’s walk, and he struck out Coby Mayo, Leody Taveras and Jeremiah Jackson in the second. Jackson got ahead 3-0 in the count but didn’t draw his third walk of the season.
Jackson also ran the count full in the sixth and grounded into a double play at 107.7 mph.
Wilson made up for his miscue by leading off the third inning with a single, stealing second base and scoring on Blaze Alexander’s bloop single into right field. Alexander stumbled after rounding first base and was tagged in a rundown.
Alexander has two RBIs this season, the first coming on Opening Day.
Pete Alonso has an extra-base hit in four consecutive games – two doubles and two home runs – and he singled today in the eighth. His leadoff double in the fourth sparked a game-tying, two-run rally. The Orioles loaded the bases with no outs, Taveras reached on an infield hit and Jackson grounded into his first double play.
Alonso scored his 600th career run on Saturday with a homer in the fourth inning, and he’s up to 601.
Tyler O’Neill drew his fifth walk in his last three games. He also made a run-saving, diving catch to end the bottom of the sixth inning after the Yankees took a 4-3 lead. Mayo made a diving stop at first base with the infield in but couldn’t transfer the ball from his mitt to hand from a kneeling position as Jasson Domínguez scored.
Rico Garcia retired the side in order in the seventh. He’s allowed one run and one hit in 14 1/3 innings, with four walks, 16 strikeouts, a 0.34 WHIP and .022 batting average against.
Domínguez hit a two-run homer off Andrew Kittredge in the eighth, and the Yankees broke open the game.
Dietrich Enns let two inherited runners score after replacing Kittredge, whose first three appearances were scoreless following his reinstatement from the injured list. His ERA soared to 18.90.
Orioles pitching has surrendered 10 or more hits in six consecutive road games, their longest streak since a seven-game stretch from June 9-15, 2022. Overall this season, the Orioles have given up 10 or more hits 20 times to lead the majors.
