He gave up just one run and four hits over seven innings, throwing 114 pitches in the Orioles’ 4-2 win over New York.

Guthrie was good from the start, retiring the first seven batters he faced before stranding two New York runners in the last of the third. He improved to 5-14 and lowered his ERA to 4.18.

Couple this start with Guthrie’s strong start on July 19 when he gave up just two earned runs in seven innings against Boston and Guthrie showed all of baseball what he is capable of doing in those recent outings.

Mark Reynolds hit a two-run homer in the second, his 22nd, to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead and Derrek Lee added a pair of RBIs with a double and solo homer.

Reynolds had hit just one homer in his previous 19 games before tonight and was 2-for-23 over his last seven games. As for Lee, he now has six homers and 19 RBIs over his last 19 games.

But it was Guthrie who gets the top starring role in this win, the Orioles first this year after going 0-6 against New York. The team ERA in those six games was 7.01 against the Yankees, but Guthrie made sure that got lowered tonight.

The Orioles improve to 42-60 and are just 12-29 since June 11. Now they get set for a quick turnaround and a day-night doubleheader on Saturday at Yankee Stadium.
