Hamel claimed on waivers, tonight's Orioles lineup and notes

The Orioles claimed right-hander Dom Hamel on waivers today from the Mets and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk. The 40-man roster is full.

Hamel, 26, was a third-round draft pick in 2021 out of Dallas Baptist University. His only major league appearance came on Wednesday against the Padres and he tossed a scoreless inning with three hits allowed and a hit batter.

Hamel made 31 appearances (11 starts) with Triple-A Syracuse and posted a 5.32 ERA and 1.330 WHIP. He struck out 75 batters in 67 2/3 innings.

Alex Jackson is catching tonight in a mostly right-handed lineup. Ryan Mountcastle is the designated hitter. Jorge Mateo gets another start in center field, which moves Colton Cowser to the bench.

Tomoyuki Sugano makes his 29th start. His ERA is down to 4.39 in 149 2/3 innings after holding the Blue Jays to one run in six frames in Toronto.

Sugano shut out the Yankees over five innings in an April 28 start at Camden Yards and allowed three runs and seven hits over 3 2/3 innings on June 20 in the Bronx.

Aaron Judge is 4-for-5 with a home run against Sugano.

The Orioles get their second left-hander in the series, Carlos Rodón, who has matched his 16-9 record from last season and posted a 3.11 ERA and 1.069 WHIP in 31 starts. The All-Star is allowing only 6.1 hits per nine innings.

Left-handers are hitting .170 with a .530 OPS and right-handers are hitting .194 with a .618 OPS.

Rodón has allowed two runs or fewer in eight consecutive outings. He’s registered 16 quality starts.

Rodón pitched at Camden Yards on April 29 and allowed two runs and two hits in six-plus innings. Gunnar Henderson homered in the seventh. He owns a 5.15 ERA in eight games (seven starts) against the Orioles and a 5.73 ERA in five games (four starts) in Baltimore.

Henderson is 2-for-9 with two homers against Rodón. Mateo is 4-for-5 with a double and home run. Mountcastle is 3-for-7 with a homer. Tyler O’Neill, who’s in left field tonight, is 3-for-9 with a double and homer.

Rodon’s ground ball rate on his fastball has gone up from 23.9 percent last season to 34.1 percent in 2025, per STATS.
