“I got my work in. We’ll leave it at that,” Hammel said.
“I was up in the zone. I was happy with my two-seamer. I wanted to work in it. That was really good. But the other stuff was up in the zone.
“I was out there to get my work in and throw strikes. Early, they were really, really aggressive on the first pitch, so I couldn’t really work on anything. Got a lot of first balls put in play. They were spitting on a lot of breaking balls. I don’t know whether they were automatically taking. But I got my work in.”
Hammel will start the third game of the season. Is he ready?
“Definitely,” he said. “That was enough to get me stretched out. I didn’t want to gas myself too much. It was warm out there, too. But I got the arm lengthened out and all my pitches pretty close where I wanted them. I’m ready.”
Kevin Gregg, Luis Ayala and Matt Lindstrom each threw a scoreless inning. Lindstrom got two ground balls and a strikeout.
