Hunter Harvey received a platelet-rich plasma injection today during his visit with Dr. James Andrews, who recommended that the young pitcher be shut down for the next six weeks.
Harvey has been diagnosed with a strained right flexor mass. Harvey sought a second opinion from Andrews after flying to Baltimore and being examined on Wednesday by team orthopedist Dr. Michael Jacobs.
Harvey, recovering from a slight fracture in his right shin, was removed from his last start at extended spring training after two innings due to stiffness in the elbow.
The Orioles selected Harvey with the 22nd pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Bandys (N.C.) High School. He was 7-5 with a 3.18 ERA in 17 starts last season with Single-A Delmarva.
The Orioles made a minor league trade today, acquiring left-hander Chris Lee from the Astros for two international bonus slots, reportedly the 46th and 76th overall.
Lee, 22, will be assigned to Single-A Frederick and used as a starter. He’s never pitched above the high Single-A level.
“He’s a left-handed pitcher with a good arm who can get his breaking ball over the plate,” said executive vice president Dan Duquette.
“He’s a talented young pitcher.”
The Tampa native is 15-17 with a 4.17 ERA in 64 games, including 48 starts. He was 3 -2 with a 4.11 ERA in seven games this season, including six starts, for Quad Cities.
The Astros chose Lee in the fourth round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft.
