SARASOTA, Fla. – Nick Markakis lined a two-out double down the right field line in the bottom of the first inning.
He didn’t stop there. Well, he sort of did, and then he kept going.
Markakis slowed up after rounding second base and was thrown out at third to end the inning. That split second of indecision cost him.
Ryan Adams did the same thing in Kissimmee after rounding first base on a single, but he made it to second for the double.

Jake Arrieta allowed a leadoff single to Pedro Ciriaco in a 15-pitch first inning. Steve Pearce doubled with one out in the second and scored with two outs on Jason Jaramillo’s double to center field.
Arrieta has thrown 31 pitches, 22 for strikes.
Update: Arrieta wasn’t particularly sharp today, though he struck out six batters over four innings. He’s charged with two runs and eight hits. He threw 67 pitches, 49 for strikes. A lefty was warming in the bullpen in case Arrieta didn’t make it through the fourth.
Someone please pick up the pace of this game.
The Orioles tied the score, 2-2, in the bottom of the fourth on singles by Randy Winn and Felix Pie, Markakis’ RBI double and Vladimir Guerrero’s sacrifice fly. And Mark Reynolds put them ahead, 3-2, with a two-out single. Reynolds has three RBIs this spring.
