Orioles pitcher Albert Suárez was designated for assignment this morning to make room for closer Ryan Helsley, who has been reinstated from the family medical emergency list.
Suárez allowed four unearned runs yesterday over four innings, his coverage sparing the bullpen of extra abuse.
Suárez was non-tendered and signed to a minor league contract. The Orioles will hope to pass him through waivers.
The 40-man roster is down to 38 players.
The Orioles conclude their series with the Red Sox this afternoon after the visiting side underwent significant changes since its 17-1 win yesterday.
Manager Alex Cora and five of his coaches were fired last night, and Jason Varitek will be reassigned within the organization.
Also let go were hitting coach Peter Fatse, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson, bench coach Ramón Vázquez, third base/outfield coach Kyle Hudson, and major league hitting strategist Joe Cronin.
Triple-A manager Chad Tracy was named interim manager. He inherits a club that’s in last place with a 10-17 record.
Kyle Bradish has registered a 3.96 ERA and 1.760 WHIP in five starts. He’s 1-5 with a 6.92 ERA in nine career starts against the Red Sox.
Trevor Story is 1-for-12 with six strikeouts against Bradish.
Boston left-hander Connelly Early, a fifth-round pick in 2023 out of the University of Virginia, has posted a 2.88 ERA in five starts. He’s surrendered only two home runs in 25 innings, but he’s also walked 13 batters.
Early has never faced the Orioles.
