The Orioles won three of four games from the Yankees, they lead the division, and they just claimed two monthly awards.
This is a team on a roll.
Shortstop Gunnar Henderson was named the American League’s Player of the Month and outfielder Colton Cowser was chosen Rookie of the Month.
Henderson batted .291 (34-for-117) with three doubles, three triples, 10 home runs, 24 RBIs, eight walks, 25 runs scored, six stolen bases and a .624 slugging percentage in 29 games. He’s tied for the major league lead in homers and ranks first in the AL in slugging and total bases. He’s tied for second in triples, extra-base hits and runs scored.
The 10 homers make Henderson the youngest player in history to reach that total before May 1.
Henderson was a unanimous choice for AL Rookie of the Year and received a Silver Slugger, and he hasn’t slowed down in 2024.
Others receiving votes for the monthly award included Royals catcher Salvador Perez, Yankees outfielder Juan Soto, Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan and Red Sox outfielder Tyler O’Neill.
Henderson is the first Orioles player to receive the honor since Manny Machado in August 2017.
This is the first time in Orioles history that they’ve claimed the AL player and rookie awards in the same month.
Cowser is the club’s first Rookie of the Month since Henderson last June. He batted .303 (23-for-76) with seven doubles, six home runs, 18 RBIs, nine walks, 12 runs scored, three stolen bases, a .632 slugging percentage and 1.004 OPS across 28 games.
Cowser led all rookies in RBIs, slugging, OPS, total bases and extra-base hits, and he tied for first in homers.
This is the second honor for Cowser, who was named Player of the Week on April 15.
Others receiving votes for the monthly award included Athletics pitcher Mason Miller, who was chosen Reliever of the Month, Athletics catcher Kyle McCann, Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu, and Rangers outfielder Wyatt Langford.
