He picks up his win since August 11, 2009 as the Orioles beat the Nationals 5-3 Friday night to start a weekend series at Nats Park.

Hernandez gave up just one hit and one run over 5 1/3 and is 1-5, 5.31. He had gone 16 starts since that last win. Alfredo Simon picked up his sixth save in the ninth. He got Ryan Zimmerman to fly out with a man on to end it.

Adam Jones hit a two-run homer in the second for a 2-0 lead and Craig Tatum added a two-run single in the third for a 4-0 edge.

Tatum was playing because Matt Wieters missed the game with a sore right knee and Jones left the game in the fourth due to leg cramps.

Willie Harris hit a two-run homer in the 7th off Matt Albers to cut the O’s lead to 4-3. They got that run back, and moved ahead 5-3, on Corey Patterson’s RBI single off Drew Storen in the eighth.

Jones homer was his first since April 24 and ended a 23-game homerless stretch.

The Orioles, who were 4-2 vs. Washington last year, are now 13-12 all-time vs. Washington since the Nats moved to Washington in 2006.

The Birds are 14-29 while Washington falls to 21-22 with its seventh loss in the last eight games.

The Orioles are 12-5 when scoring four runs or more.

In game two of the series, Saturday at 4:05, Brad Bergesen (3-3, 5.45) faces Craig Stammen (1-2, 5.86).
