Jackson Holliday has joined the Orioles in St. Petersburg, Fla., where they begin a three-game series tonight against the division-leading Rays.
A source confirmed Holliday’s arrival from Charlotte, where Triple-A Norfolk completed a six-game series yesterday. Holliday batted twice, going 1-for-2 with a triple and run scored, before leaving as part of his return to play progression.
Holliday was making his third attempt to complete an assignment after undergoing surgery in February to remove a broken hamate bone. He’s appeared in 22 games between Norfolk, Double-A Chesapeake and High-A Frederick and batted .176 with a .574 OPS.
The last eight games were played after a second shutdown. An MRI and CT scan and X-rays came back clean and Holliday joined Chesapeake for three games before returning to the Tides.
The Orioles had Holliday play three games at third base, where they lost Jordan Westburg to ligament-reconstructive surgery.
Still to be revealed is whether the Orioles are reinstating Holliday from the injured list, which requires a corresponding roster move. They’re carrying three catchers.
The alternative would be to remove an infielder.
The Orioles are making their first visit to Tropicana Field tonight since the 2024 season, before Hurricane Milton destroyed the roof in October. The Rays played at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa last year.
Left-hander Trevor Rogers will try again to recapture his 2025 form. He had a 1.89 ERA after three starts, navigating some traffic to allow only four runs in 19 innings. But he’s surrendered 18 earned runs and 19 total in his las four starts covering 15 1/3 innings to leave his ERA at 5.77 with a 1.544 WHIP.
Rogers is 0-4 during that span, tying his longest career streak of games with a loss. The 10.57 ERA is his worst over a four-game span, per STATS. Opponents are 9-for-18 with runners in scoring position during that stretch.
“From a stuff perspective, it’s really similar,” said pitching strategist Ryan Klimek. “I think that we need to kind of open up the location differences a little bit more. Just kind of get him back to maybe not being so predictable with where we’re operating.”
Rogers has made four career starts against the Rays and posted a 3.98 ERA in 20 1/3 innings. He allowed three runs in six innings in his only start at Tropicana Field.
Yandy Díaz is 4-for-7 with two doubles against Rogers.
Samuel Basallo’s 10-game hitting streak is five short of tying Eddie Murray for longest by an Orioles player 21 or younger, per STATS. Eddie Murray had a 15-game streak in 1977.
Gunnar Henderson, who hit his 10th home run yesterday at Nationals Park, owns a .333 average against Tampa Bay – fourth highest among active players in a minimum 75 at-bats, per STATS.
The Orioles have four players age 24 or younger with 20 hits this season, tied with the Athletics and Marlins for the most in the majors, according to STATS.
The Orioles won yesterday to avoid a three-game sweep in D.C. and will try to build on it. They won two of three in Kansas City, lost two of three against the Red Sox, won two of three against the Astros, lost four straight to the Yankees in the Bronx, won two of three in Miami, lost two of three to the Athletics, won two of three over the Yankees and dropped two of three to the Nationals.
The inability to gain momentum and go on a run is defining a season that hasn’t gone as planned.
“All you can do is continue to show up and put the work in, and I feel like as a team we’ve been doing that,” said Colton Cowser, who hit his first home run yesterday. “Just controlling the controllables and hoping that it continues to roll for us.”
The Orioles are 21-26 and 10 games behind the first-place Rays (30-15), who have won 18 of 22. Tampa Bay is 16-5 at home, and 9-1 this season in one-run games. The Orioles are 4-7 in one-run games.
Left-hander Shane McClanahan, who didn’t pitch in 2024 or ’25 after undergoing Tommy John surgery and a procedure to correct a nerve issue in his triceps, has made eight starts and posted a 2.27 ERA and 0.983 WHIP. He’s struck out 41 in 39 2/3 innings and surrendered only one home run.
McClanahan is on an impressive roll, who no runs allowed in his last four starts over 21 2/3 innings. He’s walked four and struck out 23.
More bad news for the Orioles: McClanahan has faced them nine times in his career and gone 6-0 with a 2.86 ERA in 50 1/3 innings.
The Orioles were 0-9 against left-handed starters before winning three straight, including an opener.
The Rays lead the all-time series 246-232. They’re 132-107 at home. The Orioles last three-game sweep in St. Petersburg came in 2014. However, the Orioles have beaten the Rays 33 times since 2022, the most by any team in that span.
