SARASOTA, Fla. – Jackson Holliday won’t be playing second base on Opening Day.
The injury recap this morning from president of baseball operations/general manager Mike Elias came with the usual surprises.
Holliday broke the hamate bone in his right hand on Feb. 6 while taking live batting practice at the Ed Smith Stadium complex, and he will begin the season on the injured list. Dr. Steven Shin will remove the bone Thursday in Los Angeles.
“It’s a pretty common baseball injury for a very long time,” Elias said. “It happens to hitters a lot. It’s nothing concerning long term but he’s gonna miss some time. Won’t be ready for Opening Day and hopefully his return is measured in weeks after that, but you’re not gonna see much of him here in Sarasota.
Holliday was a rare breed last year, avoiding the IL while teammates kept dropping around him. He appeared in 149 games and batted .242/.314/.375 with 21 doubles, three triples, 17 home runs and 55 RBIs.
“I just feel for Jackson,” said manager Craig Albernaz. “He had a great offseason and comes in here early and he’s looking great, and a freak thing. Like, how many hamates hitters have. It happens and it just stinks that it happened to Jackson. So I just feel for Jackson. But his mindset right now is great. He’s gonna get the surgery and go through the process of rehab, and he’ll be ready to go. … He’ll be back stronger.
“It definitely hurts the team, and I think it hurts the team just in the sense of morale for a little bit because these guys care and love each other, and everyone knows how hard Jackson, he put in his work, but also, now it’s time for people to step up and help us win games out of the chute.
“We have some slack to pick up, but we have guys in the clubhouse that are fully capable of it.”
Jordan Westburg can play second base when he isn’t starting at third, and the Orioles traded for utility infielder Blaze Alexander the day before Holliday’s injury.
“We’re actually going to have a meeting about this topic a little later today, how we want to portion time in spring training,” Elias said, “but it’s certainly something that’s on our minds with Jackson projected to miss Opening Day.”
Elias said the club has “quite a few” candidates for second base, “and maybe there will be somebody who’s not in camp here.”
“I don’t really know that, but that’s possible, too,” Elias said. “I definitely think that the internal options we have, it’s enough to assess for the situation that we’re looking at. I think we’re comfortable there, but we’ll monitor outside and we do have some guys we can reconfigure playing time to help cover it.”
Alexander was expected to make the club anyway after the Orioles traded reliever Kade Strowd and two minor leaguers to the Diamondbacks. He’s out of options, and the timing of his arrival is impeccable.
“You didn’t want to have an injury right away, but that’s part of the value in utility players and somebody with his profile is he helps cover you in so many different positions – second, short, third,” Elias said. “In his case we think all three outfield spots potentially we’re looking forward to plugging in with him, finding out what he’s comfortable doing, how he likes to go about his business.”
Westburg could miss the first few exhibition games after tweaking his oblique about three weeks ago. His availability for the opener shouldn’t be impacted.
“He’s turned the corner and he’s in the process of getting fully better,” Elias said.
Reliever Colin Selby, who was supposed to compete for a job in camp, will go on the IL with right shoulder inflammation. The discomfort has been an issue for much of the offseason.
“He’s behind,” Elias said. “He starting a throwing progression right now. I do not expect he’s going to be ready for Opening Day.”
Starter Zach Eflin is throwing bullpen sessions and remains full-go after his August back surgery.
“You wouldn’t know him from any of the other pitchers right now,” Elias said, “but we’re just going to kind of take it as it comes and not force anything this spring. But he’s off to a great start.”
The club hasn’t decided whether Tyler Wells will pitch in relief, but the right-hander will work out as a starter. Chayce McDermott will remain in the bullpen.
Elias also said the club hasn’t discussed an artificial innings limit for Kyle Bradish, who made six starts last season after returning from elbow-reconstructive surgery.
“I think we’re just gonna work with him and take it as it comes,” Elias said. “I think he’s in the mindset of going out and pitching as much as he possibly can, but certainly we know there’s a lot of innings to cover this year.”
Félix Bautista will miss most of the season, if not all of it, after undergoing surgery on his right labrum and rotator cuff, but Elias said the closer is doing well.
“No little issues bubbling up yet,” Elias said. “It’s early in his rehab. As we’ve said, there’s some potential to see him this season. If it is, we expect it’s going to be later, and we also don’t want to put pressure that he needs to appear this season because it’s possible that he doesn’t. But he’s off to a good start.”
Among the position players who reported early are Westburg, Holliday, Pete Alonso, Gunnar Henderson, Colton Cowser, Coby Mayo, Ryan Mountcastle, Heston Kjerstad and Enrique Bradfield Jr.
The Orioles announced their guest coaches at spring training, and the list includes Nick Markakis and former coach and manager Sam Perlozzo.
Adam Jones will be in camp from Feb. 18-28, John Shelby from Feb. 20-24, Ben McDonald from Feb. 26-March 1, Scott McGregor from Feb. 27-March 3, Perlozzo from March 6-8, Brian Roberts from March 9-12, and Nick Markakis from March 10-13.
