The Orioles will try to snap a three-game losing streak tonight with left-hander Trevor Rogers on the mound and catchers Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo on the bench again.
Rutschman didn’t play last night. Manager Craig Albernaz used Basallo as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning.
Basallo was launching long home runs this afternoon in batting practice with Albernaz pitching to him. He came out of Sunday’s game after appearing to jam his left wrist on a tag at home plate in Toronto.
Albernaz said yesterday that Basallo is dealing with some discomfort caused by a bony growth in the wrist. Some clarity on Rutschman’s situation should come after the game.
The Orioles are carrying three catchers, including Sam Huff, who’s in the lineup again tonight, and Albernaz indicated that the arrangement might not be temporary.
“Just like anything, is on the table,” he said.
“I think when we’re at our best, we have both Adley and Sammy in the lineup, and that’s a credit to both Sammy and Adley. And having the third catcher is a great safety valve for us. So it’s something that for right now it makes the most sense, but also moving forward it could be or it could not be. So there’s a lot of factors that go into that. But right now it’s definitely a benefit for us.”
Taylor Ward is the designated hitter, with Colton Cowser in left field and Tyler O’Neill in right. Cowser is batting cleanup again.
Coby Mayo is the third baseman and Jackson Holliday is playing second.
Rogers held the Red Sox to one run in 5 2/3 innings in his last start to lower his ERA to 6.29. He’s faced the Mariners twice in his career and allowed three runs in 13 1/3 innings.
Randy Arozarena, who singled three times last night, is 3-for-9 with two home runs against Rogers. Arozarena collected his 800th career hit last night in the fourth inning.
Ward has reached base at least four times in a team-high five games this season, matching his total from 2025 in 91 fewer games.
Ward has a .417/.500/.583 slash line over his last six games, compared to .182/.357/.182 in the previous six.
Gunnar Henderson has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games against the Mariners since May 17, 2024, posting a .314 average (16-for-51).
Chris Bassitt remains with the club while on the 15-day injured list with lower-back discomfort. He’s sorting through his options.
“Whether it be medication, whether it be an injection, or just resting, some rehab stuff as far as like muscle recovery and strengthening, stuff like that,” Albernaz said.
“There’s a lot of stuff on the table that he has to kind of figure out with himself and the medical staff, as well.”
Closer Ryan Helsley said he arm felt good after throwing live batting practice yesterday. He’s on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.
“Feel like it was a good step forward and made good progress,” he said.
Asked what comes next, Helsley said, “I have to talk to the staff and see what they want to do, and probably a couple more outings and have to repeat a few steps, but just to make sure that building a good foundation, a good base, and crossing all the boxes on how I feel and how I’m bouncing back.”
Helsley added that the rehab has gone “pretty smooth.”
“Good progress and good progression and throwing and lifting and arm care,” he said. “I think when you have an injury earlier in the season, you want to be a little more on the safer side. If it was September, maybe I’d try to rush back a little sooner. But I’ve been feeling good and making good progress. Hopefully just keep trending that way.”
The Orioles are 31-36 and in fourth place, one game behind the third-place Blue Jays and two out of the Wild Card.
Seattle right-hander Logan Gilbert has posted a 3.79 ERA and 1.100 WHIP in 13 starts. He’s allowed three runs or fewer in 10 outings.
Gilbert has registered a 0.94 ERA away from home and a 5.60 ERA in Seattle.
Gilbert has a 3.38 ERA and 0.964 WHIP in three career starts against the Orioles. He’s allowed three runs in 13 1/3 innings at Camden Yards.
Leody Taveras is 2-for-17 with two homers against Gilbert.
The Mariners are 10-3 since May 25.
