Catcher Sam Huff wasn’t gone for long.
The Orioles designated Huff for assignment on June 28 while reinstating Adley Rutschman from the injured list. They tried to outright Huff two days later after he cleared waivers, but he declined the assignment and became a free agent.
If this sounds familiar, the same thing has happened with reliever Albert Suárez and he’s signed a new deal.
Huff followed in those footsteps today, agreeing to another contract with Triple-A Norfolk.
The depth is needed. Catcher Chadwick Tromp was designated for assignment earlier today while the Orioles recalled reliever Anthony Nunez and infielder/outfielder Jeremiah Jackson.
Huff went 4-for-23 with the Orioles, who like the way he calls a game and handles the pitching staff.
Norfolk’s catching trio consists of Huff, Silas Ardoin and Adam Retzbach, who moved up yesterday from Double-A Chesapeake. Creed Willems is on the injured list with a hamstring strain.
Willems is the No. 17 prospect in the system, according to MLB Pipeline.
Also in minor league news, reliever Yaramil Hiraldo had his rehab assignment moved from High-A Frederick to Norfolk earlier today.
