They had runners on first and second and none out.

Up came Luke Scott, batting fifth today.

Now, I don’t know of any American League team that would ask its number five hitter to bunt in the 4th of a 0-0 game.

But I would have had Luke try to drop a bunt there.

I know, it sounds crazy. Scott went on to hit into a rally-killing double play. I’m not second guessing, I said it to myself before the play.

I would say 99 times out of 100, maybe more, you just have Scott hit away there. It’s only the fourth. No way do you bunt there.

But desperate times call for desperate measures. Until this team proves it can score some runs, you have to try and make things happen.

Someone do something unselfish, maybe that will spark this team.

Had the O’s been able to sac bunt there, it would have been their first of the year. Last year, you guessed it, the O’s were last in the league in sac bunts.

Therein lies an issue with this team. Poor situational hitting. Someone needs to give himself up sometimes and let the other guy get the RBI.

As I finish typing this, the A’s just dropped a sac bunt. Now they lead 2-0 after a sac fly. Oh, that’s how its done.

This is not a rip at Luke Scott. It’s a knock on the O’s offense and batters as a whole.

They might score eight runs today and win easily. But right now, someone dropping a sac bunt could be a small act that goes a long way.
