Orioles starters Zach Eflin and Cade Povich are going on injury rehab assignments Sunday while their teammates play their final game before the All-Star break.
Eflin, on the 15-day injured list with lower back discomfort, will join Triple-A Norfolk in Jacksonville. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said Povich, on the 15-day IL with left hip inflammation, will report to High-A Aberdeen or Double-A Chesapeake.
Catcher Chadwick Tromp, on the 10-day IL with a lower back strain, is doing full baseball activities. He could begin a rehab assignment after the break.
Catcher Maverick Handley, sidelined with a concussion, is cleared for some activities – he ran and played catch today - but probably won’t swing a bat for at least another week.
“I would expect Trompy to be ahead of Handley at this point,” Mansolino said.
The Orioles are looking to win three straight series for the first time this season as they host the Marlins tonight.
Jordan Westburg is at third base tonight and Ramón Laureano is the designated hitter. Jacob Stallings is catching.
Dean Kremer was on a roll with two runs allowed over his last three starts before surrendering five, along with eight hits, in 4 1/3 innings in Atlanta. He allowed one run and two hits in six innings in his only career start against the Marlins in July 2023 at Camden Yards.
Kremer has a 1.74 ERA and 0.97 WHIP this season in five home starts. He’s gone more than five innings and allowed one run or fewer in four of those five games at Camden Yards.
Per STATS, the only Orioles to have four such outings in their first five home starts in a year are Wally Bunker (1964), Jim Palmer (1969), Jason Johnson (2001) and Kyle Bradish (2023).
It took Gunnar Henderson 427 games to reach 800 career bases, fewest in Orioles history for a player making his debut with the team. Cal Ripken Jr. held the record at 432.
The Orioles returned 27th man Grant Wolfram to Triple-A Norfolk after Game 2. Wolfram stuck around long enough to earn his first major league win.
Since the start of 2022, the Orioles have compiled a 29-19 (.604) record against the National League East, which is second best by any team in that span behind the Astros’ 32-20 (.615) mark, per STATS.
Miami right-hander Edward Cabrera has posted a 3.33 ERA in 15 starts, and he’s struck out 80 batters in 78 1/3 innings. He’s made two starts this month and tossed seven scoreless innings with two hits against the Twins and allowed two runs in seven innings against the Brewers.
Cabrera has faced the Orioles once in his career and allowed three runs and three hits in 5 1/3 innings on July 24, 2024 in Miami.
Stallings is 2-for-4 with a home run against Cabrera.
The Marlins are 42-50 and in third place in the National League East. They’ve gone 22-23 on the road.
Miami has lost three of its last five games and five of nine after an eight-game winning streak. However, the Marlins are 30-14 against the Orioles since entering the majors in 1993.
The Marlins have allowed 116 stolen bases this season, tied for fifth most all-time by any team prior to the All-Star break, per STATS.
Former Orioles Kyle Stowers, an All-Star in 2025, and Connor Norby return to Baltimore. Stowers, who’s batting .279/.352/.507 with 13 doubles, three triples, 16 home runs and 48 RBIs in 88 games, is playing left field and Norby, batting .240/.289/.364 with 11 doubles, a triple, six homers and 26 RBIs in 71 games, is at third base.
“Yeah, I got to talk to them both already today,” Mansolino said. “Definitely fond of both of those guys. I spent probably more one-on-one time with Norbs, just because of the infield stuff and back-field stuff in big league camp for a couple years. But also spent a lot of time with Stowers. A guy that I really like. It’s one of those guys who you kind of want your kids to grow up and be like Stowers a little bit, with just the personality and whatnot.
“So good guys, rooting for them. Not necessarily this weekend, but definitely guys that our whole clubhouse is pulling for. Really any other days than these next three.”
