Angle misplayed Dustin Pedroia’s long fly ball to center field in the fifth inning, resulting in a triple that scored Adrian Gonzalez and reduced the Orioles’ lead to 6-4.
Jeremy Guthrie got the first two outs, fell behind 3-0 to Marco Scutaro and walked him with the count full by missing with a slider. Gonzalez followed with an RBI double – Angle had trouble picking up the ball cleanly – and Pedroia put another dent in the Orioles’ lead.
Angle, known for his plus defense, pulled up on the ball at the warning track.
Maybe it will be easier in Game 2, which starts at 7:05 p.m.
By the way, bad things usually happen after a walk. Just reminding you.
Update: The Red Sox scored with two outs in the seventh against left-hander Troy Patton to reduce the Orioles’ lead to 6-5.
This is getting real uncomfortable.
Patton replaced Guthrie with no outs and got a double play, but Scutaro doubled with two outs – yes, two outs – and scored on Gonzalez’s single.
Willie Eyre replaced Patton and retired Dustin Pedroia on a liner to center. No way you want Pedroia facing a left-hander. He owns them.
Guthrie allowed four runs and 10 hits in six-plus innings. He can’t lose his 18th game. He won’t lose 20 this season.
Update II: The Orioles failed to score in the eighth after putting runners on second and third with no outs. Ugh!
