Jackson stays in lineup, updates on Sánchez and O'Neill, UMPS CARE note

Jeremiah Jackson sat at his locker earlier today, raised his right arm and pointed to the spot where last night’s pitch slammed into his elbow. He showed a teammate the damage, which he said was minimal.

He knew that it could have been worse.

Braxton Ashcraft’s 95.5 mph fastball nailed Jackson in the eighth inning after he singled and homered. Daniel Johnson pinch-ran for him.

“Elbow ‘s fine,” Jackson said this afternoon before heading to the field for the team photo. “A little sore. I was coming out of the game anyway, defensive replacement. But yeah, I mean, it’s never fun to get hit in the elbow, but everything’s fine. Just a little bruise.”

Jackson is playing pretty much every day as a rookie and he’s thriving with a .314/.346/.521 line in 33 games. He has six doubles, two triples, five home runs and 18 RBIs.

The timing of an injury would be cruel.

“It was just kind of a weird spot, kind of get hit in the funny bone,” he said. “I didn’t think it was anything too series. I knew I’d be sore today, but it’s nothing too serious.”

Jackson is batting second again tonight and playing third base. He started in right field again last night.

“It’s good,” he said. “It’s fun to have the versatility and be able to play all over and get in the lineup whenever I can. Just get some reps today, get practice in and get ready for the game.”

Jackson’s home run last night broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning, allowing him to wear the Ravens helmet in the dugout that’s replaced the cowboy hat.

“That was awesome," he said. “That’s a good celebration. I think it’s the best one. Yeah, it’s cool.”

Samuel Basallo is batting fifth and catching. Dylan Beavers is in right field and Coby Mayo is at first base.

Gary Sánchez starts his injury rehab assignment tonight with Triple-A Norfolk, serving as the designated hitter. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said it could be a few weeks before Sánchez is reinstated, which doesn’t leave many games.

"He's been out for a while," Mansolino said. "He's got to catch, he's got to build his body up. So it's gonna be a good amount of time.

"That type of stuff, you can't rush."

Outfielder Tyler O’Neill is expected to be in Friday night’s lineup in Toronto.
