He hasn’t pitched in a game since April 21 for the Orioles but they need a starter for tomorrow’s game in Detroit and it’s going to be Jake Arrieta getting that start, Buck Showalter said after today’s game.
“Been waiting for an opportunity and I look forward to capitalizing on that and trying to help this team continue to win,” Arrieta said after today’s game. “If I go out there and do my job, we have a great chance to win that game. “Been waiting for an opportunity and I look forward to capitalizing on that and trying to help this team continue to win,” Arrieta said after today’s game. “If I go out there and do my job, we have a great chance to win that game. I feel like I’ve done everything I need to do to prepare for this situation.
“Found out today. I knew this was a possibility and got confirmation not long ago. It’s exciting, I look forward to it.”
Arrieta will be pitching on seven days’ rest as his last Triple-A outing was a week ago today. Will that be a challenge for him?
“Not really,” Arrieta said. “I’ve stayed sharp throwing and going through mound progressions and mechanically staying sharp. The days in between won’t really have an effect, I’ll be ready.”
Arrieta was 3-3 with a 5.50 ERA at Norfolk but the stats from his last two starts were not good. He pitched 10 1/3 innings giving up 19 hits and allowing 15 runs.
“I gave up a few more hits than I’d like but I throw a lot of strikes and the walks were down. If I pound the zone with my stuff, I’ll give myself a good chance to have success,” he said.
Meanwhile Jason Hammel said after today’s game that he threw some today after being told to stay home two days with a stomach virus. He said he needs to recover the strength in his legs to get allow him to go deep enough into a game to make a start. He hopes to start Tuesday’s game at Detroit.
