Second baseman Jonathan Schoop worked out again today at Camden Yards and will report to Single-A Frederick later this week while continuing his injury rehab assignment.
Schoop is likely to join the Keys on Thursday. He won’t accompany the Orioles to Chicago.
Schoop’s rehab assignment runs through Friday and the Orioles are discussing whether to option him instead of placing him on the active roster.
“Obviously, he can be optioned. There are a lot of things there for us,” said manager Buck Showalter.
“Like I said before, Jonathan will benefit by every day he can get the knee that much stronger. It’s a pretty significant injury, so I want to keep that in mind, but we feel like Jon, if we had to, could be activated and he could benefit from playing in the minor leagues.”
Rule 5 pick Jason Garcia will go out on a rehab assignment “shortly,” according to Showalter. He’s scheduled to throw a few more bullpen sessions.
Garcia is on the disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis.
Chris Davis is in right field again tonight, with Chris Parmelee at first base.
“Just take it day to day,” Showalter said. “There was a need there with some at-bats yesterday. Chris (Davis) would handle right field, left field, third base, first base. The guy is a good athlete. After playing a doubleheader out there, I wanted to DH him yesterday.
“It’s actually less wear and tear for him out there than it is first base in some ways, if you look at what infielders have to do on every pitch. But I think Chris is going to be a good defender no matter where we put him.”
