SARASOTA, Fla. – Kevin Gausman won’t make his scheduled start Monday morning at the minor league complex due to right shoulder tendinitis.
Gausman has been on the medical sheet for the past week. He received a cortisone injection in the shoulder earlier today and is expected to be shut down for the next two to three days.
Gausman sat at his locker with an ice pack on the shoulder. However, he talked about making his start versus the Rays’ Single-A team, with a goal of throwing about 75 pitches.
It’s not going to happen. Instead, he’s been shut down while the Orioles wait for the inflammation to go away.
The Orioles placed Gausman on the disabled list last May with right shoulder tendinitis.
Gausman, who seems to be lined up as the No. 3 starter on opening day, has allowed three runs and five hits in six innings over two Grapefruit League starts. He’s walked one batter and struck out six.
The former first-round pick out of LSU also started a B game against the Pirates earlier this spring.
Matt Wieters took batting practice again today and also made 25 throws, moving out to 60 feet. It’s the first time he threw since experiencing soreness in his right elbow.
Manager Buck Showalter sounds encouraged by Wieters’ progress. Earlier X-rays and an MRI didn’t reveal any structural damage in the elbow.
Outfielder Xavier Avery’s right hip feels much better today, also an encouraging sign for Showalter.
Tyler Wilson, Darren O’Day, Mychal Givens and Brad Brach are pitching in an intrasquad game today at Twin Lakes Park.
Yovani Gallardo and Jeff Beliveau will pitch Monday at the minor league complex.
My next blog entry will include quotes from Showalter.
