The Orioles didn’t list their starters for the weekend series against the Red Sox at Camden Yards.
The reason was revealed this evening.
Dean Kremer went on the 15-day injured list with a right quad strain. The move is retroactive to April 20.
Right-hander Brandon Young has been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk and will start Friday night.
Kremer was optioned at the end of spring training and didn’t make his Orioles 2026 debut until April 13 against the Diamondbacks. He started five days later in Cleveland, and he’s allowed a combined five earned runs and seven total with two walks and 16 strikeouts over 11 innings.
Though he experienced mild forearm discomfort last September, Kremer led the team with 171 2/3 innings.
Injuries keep hammering the Orioles again this season. Catcher Adley Rutschman was reinstated from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday, but Kremer joins a group that includes relievers Andrew Kittredge, Keegan Akin and Dietrich Enns, first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, second baseman Jackson Holliday and third baseman Jordan Westburg.
Holliday underwent an MRI on his right hand after striking out Tuesday in his only at-bat with Norfolk on his second rehab assignment. The club hasn’t announced the results.
Zach Eflin, who broke camp as the No. 5 starter while Kremer was optioned, lasted 3 2/3 innings before tearing the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Outfielder Tyler O’Neill remains on the seven-day concussion list. Relievers Yaramil Hiraldo and Colin Selby are on the 60-day IL.
Manager Craig Albernaz can provide an update on Kremer’s condition at Friday’s media session.
Young tossed five scoreless innings with two hits allowed in Chicago in his only Orioles appearance. He’s surrendered only two runs in 16 2/3 innings over three starts with the Tides and seemed like the obvious choice to replace Kremer to begin the homestand.
Trevor Rogers starts Saturday and Kyle Bradish on Sunday.
The rotation has a collective 4.37 ERA that ranks 20th in the majors, and the 1.50 WHIP is 26th.
